Valcivir contains Valacyclovir, which is an antiviral medication used to manage infections caused by the herpes simplex virus that results in cold sores (HSV-1), genital herpes (HSV-II), and shingles or herpes zoster (varicella virus). It helps relieve painful symptoms, facilitate healing of blisters, and prevent recurrent infections.

Valcivir is indicated for treating skin and mucous membrane infections due to herpes simplex virus, including cold sores (herpes labialis), initial and recurrent genital herpes in individuals with a healthy immune system, and shingles (herpes zoster). Additionally, Valcivir is used to suppress recurrent genital herpes infections in individuals with an active immune system (immunocompetent) and to minimize the risk of transmitting genital herpes to others. For patients with HIV who are immunocompromised, Valcivir serves a preventive (prophylactic) role against herpes infections. It is also prescribed for treating cold sores in children aged 12 and older, as well as chickenpox, due to the closely related varicella zoster virus in children aged 2 and above, and shingles (herpes zoster) in immunocompetent adults.

The active ingredient in Valcivir is Valacyclovir, an antiviral agent effective against herpes virus infections including genital herpes and cold sores; it also works against the related varicella zoster herpes virus responsible for chickenpox and shingles.

Common side effects reported while using Valcivir include headache, nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, and dizziness. Less frequently, mild reversible neurological reactions, fatigue, and changes in liver function tests may occur, particularly with prolonged treatment.

Valcivir should not be used if you are allergic to valacyclovir or any of its components; if you are pregnant or breastfeeding; if you have kidney or liver disease; if you have undergone a bone marrow transplant; or if you are taking medications that may interact with Valcivir without consulting your doctor. This includes probenecid (for gout), cimetidine (for ulcers), methotrexate (for cancer treatment), the immunosuppressant ciclosporin, the antiviral foscarnet, and aminoglycoside antibiotics.

When taking Valcivir, swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water, with or without food, typically twice daily based on your treatment plan and your doctor’s advice. It’s best to begin taking Valcivir as soon as you notice symptoms like tingling, burning, or blisters. The dosage, frequency, and duration depend on the specific condition being treated and your physician’s recommendations. Treatment may last from 3 to 10 days for an initial infection or longer, varying by your condition and whether the treatment is for an initial or recurrent infection or for prevention.

Continue taking Valcivir for the duration advised by your doctor, which may range from 3 to 10 days or longer, depending on your condition and treatment needs.

If you miss a dose of Valcivir, take it as soon as you remember unless it’s close to the time for your next dose; in that case, skip the missed dose and do not take a double dose.

Store Valcivir below 25°C in a cool, dry location.
